Happy New Year 2011 – Patch Lab kicks us off!

by Marc on Jan.03, 2011, under News

Mark Mosher of Modulate This! takes no time off, he has released a new project called Patch Lab.

His words:

I’ve had a passion for programming synths and working with samplers for over 20 years. I’m constantly experimenting and creating new patches with a large variety of electronic music instruments. I’m also creating original harmonic content via field recordings and re-synthesis.

Robert Henke in Denver

by Marc on Sep.30, 2010, under Locally

Robert Henke spent a few days with us – the posts are starting to roll in – Mark Mosher did a great job documenting the visit.

There are photo streams (still adding, I hit the limit).

I have a few pages of notes and ideas from the visit – I am still gathering my thoughts on the topic – I promise some insight.

Robert said he will be back for CMKY.

Don’t forget ILL GATES is dropping a workshop tonight and a performance too!

Mark Mosher / Modulate This + Audio Cubes

by Admin on Mar.10, 2010, under Locally, News

I am so happy to add a controller to our next meet up!

Mark Mosher (Modulate This!) will be joining us on Sunday to present Audio Cubes. Click here to read what Mark has to say on the topic.

In my mind, Audio Cubes, from Percussa, are like a 3D reactable table after shedding several thousands of dollars and pounds.

This page will get you in-line pretty fast (great stuff).

And some informative video:

Tell us about how YOU control your electronic music so we can keep the demos coming!

Modulate This, Cubes, and a weekend of snow

by Marc on Feb.23, 2010, under Locally, News

I happen to be listening to Mark Mosher’s Interview on ModulateThis! with Bert-Schiettecatte from Percussa Audio Cubes. I would provide some commentary, but I am still listening.  …and so could you:

This has peaked my interest.  I know we will be seeing a demo on these very soon from Mark.  Great interview!

This CDM Article on Austin’s hardware hacking has some fun videos and info.  There are more than one way to hack.  Here’s a select video:

A little noisy, but there is always the saturators and resonators to fix things.

The aptly titled “Scratch Yourslef Stupid“:

Special Reminder: This is cool:

For anyone looking for Arduino part, Curious Inventor has you covered.

I look forward to seeing more projects with these chips.

You can really see the gear lust in his eyes at one point in the interview.  To really understand your equipment you need to think like the box. You are the MPC.

Thanks to this Synthopia article pointing out the Open Source project for creating iPad instruments. So much hope!

Argos Interface Builder, v0.20 from Dimitri Diakopoulos on Vimeo.

Go go Argos Interface Builder. Wow!

Just as I was starting to sell myself on the DNA program by Celemony DNA and Ean’s crew over at DJ Tech Tools released comprehensive video and information on the topic. Thanks so much, it was very helpful.

There is a link for Boulder artists located here:

http://soundcloud.com/groups/boulder-electronic-music-artists – the text in the link says it all.

Keepin’ them short but good, out!

Of course you get the blatant promotion:

PETTING ZOO on Sunday – many controllers, many fun, no hay on floor!

What is going on – December 2009!

by Marc on Dec.22, 2009, under Locally, News

As we round out 2009 (a pretty good year) I want to know what is going on as well as some plans for the future of Ableton in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.

News and Plans:

  • Code clean up pending. The site is running well, but I am a programmer by day and I feel like I should tweak on this stuff.
  • Soundcloud+ integration. I think Soundcloud is the winning music sharing app.  Many people out there agree. So, I am working on a t-i-g-h-t integration on sight. There are both free and pay versions.
  • Sister sight of [redacted-site-name].com is coming where we will post Ableton-centric music – multiple formats. Suggestions welcome!
  • PODCAST – I am seeing a “gap” on Ableton podacsting. Something informative, Ableton-centric but not exclusive. Topics such as new music, technique, tools, software, announcements, and lots of guests! We have a video studio available to produce additional material. Who out there is in love with their voice?
  • Feburary Meet-Up  February 28, 2010 – we have at a Controller-ism special.  So far Mark from Modulate This! will be demonstrating Percussa Audio Cubes. Also, Darren Kramer will be sowing off his Lemur. David Henderson presenting  Monome and Lunchpad. I am waiting on a MIDI Fighter . Please contact me if you can fill in any parts or have unique controller-ism to show off!
  • March Meet-Up is 14March2010-spring time seems right for “Ableton Out of the Box” – an external processing extravaganza! This is my main research focus using Ableton.  I am looking for more people who are freaks like me, so grab me anyway you can and start talking! This one is NOT set in stone! I am listening to ideas!
  • Future Meet Up Idea : Video Integration – Call for ideas and speakers!
  • Future Meet Up Idea : DJ Collaboration – Call for ideas and speakers!
  • Future Meet Up Idea : Integration of Electronic Music into a Live Band Environment – Call for ideas and speakers!
  • Open House at the home for Ableton Denver on 23Jan2009 (a Saturday Afternoon) More on that soon!
  • Swallow Hill Class led by Chris Lawhead from Colorado Music Lab presenting “Ableton Live A-Z workshop” at Swallow Hill on Saturday 30January2009 at 1:30. This is an intro to Ableton, if you want to get a jump start sign up! (I will be there assisting Chris).
  • Collaboration is starting! Don with NIIO Analog has some ideas. Spark Fun in Boulder does the whole Arduino thing. We have a circle of people communicating already. Contact us and let us know your mad skillz!  There are a few other projects heating up.  I hope we can bring more people together and make good stuff!
  • Events Page! I am setting up a submission for events on the site. I r-e-a-l-l-y want to post all the shows in the Rocky Mountain area that feature Ableton.
  • Speaking of events: Colorado Bass Music presents Siren at Beta(FB link) 15January2010 – Saturday  http://soundcloud.com/siren-music http://www.myspace.com/sirenheat

That is it for now!  Warp your  world!

Week of November 29, 2009 – Post THX-giver

by Marc on Nov.30, 2009, under News

Happy THXGVNG!

As promised James (Tobin) has placed Reason Template files on his site at http://www.dorjerecords.com/DAUG/ and I copied and mirrored the data here : http://abltn.com/press-kit/2009-11-meetup/follow-up/ – These are ready to go and will help out for the first leap or more.

James is super cool and if want to contact him feel free. Use his http://www.dorjerecords.com/ website.

Back to the Launchpad, no not really.  I have  an Akai MPD24 now and ultimately this unit is a much better performer for me.

I was reminded by David that the Launchpad IS cool. I agree.  I have some bad taste for now. So here is a video demonstrating some of the coolness. There are a lot of cool controllers coming on the market. I am interested in testing and talking about all of them and building a few also.

Mark  Mosher (http://modulatethis.com) has released his new album “Reboot“. If I know Mark, this is an all Ableton Project (with some injections of other technology here and there). This album is available at http://markmosher.bandcamp.com/ (free or donation) as well as on iTunes and other outlets.

Some thoughts on the meet up(s).

1. Spill 2 beers on Launchpad. That might make things go better for me next time.

2. Definitely want to have performers for the night. Thanks again to Chase for the soundtrack.  I plan on having him back for the next meet up (tentatively scheduled for 22Jan2010).  Anyone who is interested in providing the evening music please contact me. I would like to include collaborative and experimental stuff also.

3. Like any other tech meet up we I would like to grow the community involvement.  One area I consider critical is MIDI / Computer support.  So, I am interested in incorporating a meet up area for people to “test” or “help” with equipment after the meet up. So, bring laptops (there is wireless in the Walnut). This is inspired by the install fest that Ubuntu does “installfest”‘s (Google search). So, there are a few of us Ableton and MIDI geeks. If we can help we will. We need both types of experts as well as some problems.

Next meet up topics – well, looking for a speaker on Max4Live.  I am not diving in too deep with max until my new studio project is rolling.  I am watching the topic closely, but I am working in another room for a while. Are you ready talk about it?

In the world of Ableton, there are a TON of sample packs getting released.  I can’t keep up (still recovering from vacation and marriage).

The Win7 footprint is not making any significant presence yet.  Not nearly as loud as Apple on the Snow Leopard release.

Love this, a via gearwire a mini tenori on think geek.

OMG So want to get? You too?(next link)

http://www.djtechtools.com/2009/11/19/diy-midifighter-kit_midi-fighter/#more-3435

Take a look at this demo. Do you agree on how the lines between Ableton (type) performance is melding with DJ Performance tools.

Some new people at the last Abelton Meet worth mentioning.

Chris from Spark Fun (Boulder) came down thanks again. Collaboration is in the future.  Anyone interested in Arduidno domination?

Also Doug from NIIO Analog stopped by with his Iotine Core. Analog filter with great control.  I look forward to hooking up with him again soon. People are building cool as all heck stuff in our area!!!

Again, I would like to remind everyone that the gap  between DJ tools and Ableton are closing.  I read some passing blurb about a formal announcement scheduled for Winter NAMM. So, I have been looking into Traktor / DJ Tool crossovers with Ableton.  There is a presentation in the making on this topic.

I am always looking for new ideas and speakers.  There are a few people who need to send me an email still who I met.

I am sorting through a back log of RSS feeds, I will pop stuff on line as I find it.

Any good shows happening? Send them through…

Thanks, warp hard.

Week of 12 October 2009 – super post!

by Marc on Oct.12, 2009, under News

Preamble:  Thank you to everyone who came out for meeting number 1.  Our second is coming up 15November2009.  As soon I get the press release worked out I will post the invites and such.

This is a super collection of the past 2 weeks.  Business has kept me form collecting and formatting a post.  So here’s to catching up.

P(re)S: I have begun putting some Ableton videos out.  My first one is on the bottom of the page.  Let me know what you think.

Ableton Land

Novation Lanuchpad Coverage: First, let’s get a first class “word ‘em up” to Ableton for keeping a secret. This came out of left field for me. Is this true for everyone else?

I am very interested in the build quality of this unit.  Novation has a checkered history on some units and decisions.  A live performance controller demands quality, reliability, and no foolishness. The price point ($200 street)  raises my eyebrow. Ye olde mantra of “you get what you pay for” is not to be ignored.  I see this discussion unfolding on the net in the coming months.

The Launch pad at the Novation site. Also as seen on Matrix Synth, Gear Junkies, and some Q&A on CDM

Big news on coming big news – the long fabled Ableton + Serato project.  Back in the days of old (7 months ago) there we rumors coming from the Forest of Doom telling the townsfolk that the elves were working on bringing peace between the digital Gods of Ableton and Serato.  Not into the myth and story, all you need to know is here at Gear Junkies. The short version – 14January2010 at NAMM there will be a delivery of information

With each passing year I regret missing the AES show. Max for Live had an event event at AES 127 NYC – thanks Gear Junkies.

Wacom Table Theremin using Max for Live:

Off topic

Something Cute, how a Neuman microphone is born on YouTube.

Show your age, an interview with Thomas Dolby

Gear Watch

This will blow your mind resistive touch. Think ” the foundation of an amazing controller”.

Slow load but a lot of fun stuff here. Synth type of stuff…

Mark Mosher reviews DCAM synth Squad.

Via Gear Junkies Lexicon releases the PCM Native Reverb Plug-in Bundle VST / Audio Unit / RTAS Software Reverb Plug-in.  The “PCM” caught my eye (pulse-code modulation) but a scan of the information shows no interesting connection.  Hmm. I think we are dealing wit another kick ass reverb.  Lexicon is hardly a bottom feeder in this field – so check it out!

The Eigenharp is out, I will give the ping-back to Latest Analog Suicide.  I have been watching this unit for a while and I still do not know what to think.  I am both pleased and fearful.  I fear the return of the “one man band in the shopping mall” while I also applaud the innovative use of technology and a feeling of quality craftsmanship. Eigen Labs is the producer of this equipment. When you buy it can I borrow the unit?

Audio Damage is getting ready to release its first instrument. Rumor has it as a Drum Synthesizer. More info here.

Studio Electronics (my Filter of choice) has some sexy stuff, the Omega Series (get to know it).

Tech
Puremagnetik introduces Waveframe for Live 7 & 8 via Synthopia. “Waveframe is a an advanced wavetable synthesizer designed exclusively for the features of Ableton Live.”

Dj Jazzy Jeff on Serato and Ableton:

Free random panner plugin for Mac.

Nanoloop 1.5, running on a GameBoy, synced to Ableton Live. Cute, kinda funny, and ultimately important highlighting how much we can do:

Free Windows Arp modeled synthesizer.

The Crossover continues – MakingDJ frindly edits on Live via Synthtopia.

Free Synth Plugin.

Designing Glitchy Sounds in Ableton Live:

Check out the 7 videos on using Ableton Live With Open Labs’ DBeat Music Production Workstation – strart at Synthtopia.

Free Windows Plugins.

Reverse Reverb in Ableton popped up a few times – let’s give the credit to Synthtopia.

Propellerheads (regarding the Record program) have a good reference on EQ usage.

Oreilly on Windows 7 and music production. I have been running Ultimate 7 for a few weeks now and I must say, it runs really well.  I have not put Ableton on it yet, but Cubase is running as good, if not better, than on a Mac.  I am seriously impressed while still poised to dump all my Windows machines (my laptop is running Linux via Ubuntu), but Windows 7 may not be the “doom and gloom” we expect after the years of Vista. (sorry for some bias there – I got ska-ha-rewed)

More on Windows 7 and music production.

Synthtopia reports on this sample pack based on glass instruments.

Did you know M-Audio has a YouTube channel?

Audio to MIDI anyone?

Sweetwater AES coverage.

More Ardour coverage. (Linux and Mac digital recording – good stuff!)

Electronic / Programming Video from Ableton:

As promised – my video #1 – Highlighting out of Ableton processing.  The effects on the end of the video are pretty complicated.  That is all out of Ableton – the current routing causes massive abuse on my Rane mixer.  I have to limit that sort of fun until I build a circuit to bypass the Rane and emulate the signal flow.
